A Think Tank with a Transmitter

IKIM – the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia – was set up in 1992 as a government think tank under the Prime Minister’s Department. The idea came from Mahathir Mohamad, who wanted a body whose job was to improve understanding of Islam among Malaysians.

For its first decade the institute worked through the channels available to any research organisation: seminars, forums, training, consultation, and a publishing arm producing books and journals in Malay and English.

Radio came later, and it changed the arithmetic entirely. A seminar reaches a room. A book reaches whoever buys it. A national frequency reaches anyone who switches it on.

Malaysia’s First 24-Hour Islamic Station

IKIM FM was launched on 6 July 2001 by Mahathir Mohamad – the same prime minister whose idea the institute had been nine years earlier.

It was the first Islamic radio service in Malaysia to run twenty-four hours a day, and it still does.

Round-the-clock scheduling suits this kind of station more than most. Religious listening does not confine itself to convenient hours: there is an audience before dawn, late at night, and through the stretches of the day when commercial radio assumes nobody is paying attention.

Mostly Malay, with Arabic and English

Roughly ninety-five per cent of the output is in Malay, which reflects the audience it was built for.

The remainder runs in English and Arabic. Arabic needs little explaining on a station of this kind. The English content matters for a different reason: IKIM’s stated purpose includes explaining Islam to non-Muslims as well as to Muslims, and in Malaysia a good deal of that conversation happens in English.

Heard Well Past the Border

The listenership does not stop at Malaysia’s edges. It extends into Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and southern Thailand – a largely Malay-speaking, largely Muslim region that has never paid much attention to national borders when choosing what to listen to.

Where It Broadcasts

IKIM FM runs on frequencies across the country, ranging from around 89.0 MHz in the northern states up to 107.3 MHz in Sabah.

Worth noting is what that covers: Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah alike. A fair number of Malaysian stations never make it across to East Malaysia at all. This one was built to be national from the outset.

Carrying Further Than the Signal

Even national coverage has edges. The stream does not.

It runs in a browser on a phone, tablet or laptop, with no receiver, no frequency to look up and nothing to install. For Malaysians working abroad – and for anyone who wants this particular kind of programming wherever they are – it is the simplest way in.

Because the station broadcasts continuously, there is no schedule to plan around either. Whatever is on air is what plays.
