Radio Made for the East Coast

Molek FM went on air in January 2022 with a clear brief: serve the east coast rather than treat it as an afterthought.

Its stated audience is listeners between eighteen and thirty-nine, with the sharpest focus on those aged twenty-four to thirty-four across the three states.

That regional focus counts for more on the east coast than it might elsewhere. Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang have their own dialects, their own rhythm and a cultural life that Klang Valley programming has never covered especially closely.

The on-air line-up has featured names such as Nazz, Qila Shahirah, Mat Dan and Anna Aljuffrey, though as at any commercial station the roster shifts over time.

A Playlist That Crosses Borders

The music is where the station gets interesting.

Alongside the expected Malay material and a strong run of eighties and nineties songs, the playlist takes in Indonesian, Hindi, English and Thai hits.

Thai songs on a Malaysian station are no accident. Kelantan shares a land border with Thailand, and the cultural traffic across it has always run both ways. A station serving the far north-east while ignoring Thai music would be missing something its listeners already know by heart.

New, and Only Ever Itself

There is something else unusual about Molek FM, and you really only notice it standing next to its siblings.

Media Prima’s other stations have been renamed repeatedly – some of them four or five times over, cycling through identities as the market moved. Molek FM has never been anything else. It launched under this name and has kept it.

In a crowded commercial market, that is a small kind of stability.

Three Frequencies, Three States

The station runs one frequency per state:

• 105.1 MHz – Kota Bharu, Kelantan
• 93.6 MHz – Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu
• 100.4 MHz – Kuantan, Pahang

The studios are not on the coast at all. Molek FM is produced from Media Prima’s Balai Berita headquarters in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, and broadcast out to the three states around the clock. Made in Kuala Lumpur, but not for it.

When You’re Out of Range

Three transmitters serve three state capitals well. They do not cover everywhere.

A good deal of the east coast sits between those towns, and a great many people from Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang now live and work in the Klang Valley, Johor or Singapore – well outside the reach of any of them.

The stream closes that distance. It runs in a browser on a phone, tablet or laptop, with no frequency to find and nothing to install, which is usually how east coast listeners keep hold of their own station after moving away for work.
